The Devban Trek, also called the Deoban Trek, is a lesser-known hiking spot near Dehradun in Uttarakhand. It lies in the beautiful Kanasar forest range, close to the Himachal Pradesh border, and is part of a protected forest area. At the heart of this trek is a charming forest rest house, built in 1963, at an altitude of 2,865 meters. The nearest road access is from Chakrata, a small town just 16 km away.
This trek is perfect for families, kids, and beginners looking for a fun weekend adventure. The trail takes you through thick forests filled with trees like oak, pine, fir, and deodar. Near the rocky areas, you’ll also see some thorny shrubs. The forest gets its name from the “Devdaru” or deodar tree, a Sanskrit word meaning “divine wood.” In Hindi, “Dev” means god, and “Ban” means forest, so Devban translates to “divine forest.”
Chakrata, a peaceful British-era town, is near the trek. The town has old stone houses with tall chimneys, giving it a unique, vintage vibe. However, some parts of Chakrata are restricted because of army bases. The region is part of the Shiwalik hills, made mostly of soft rocks like limestone. In some places, you can spot quartz rock bands, and there are even limestone caves in the lower hills. Locals here speak the Jaunsari language, and you can often see Gujjar huts scattered on the hillsides.
In winter, snow blocks the motorable road to the forest rest house, giving trekkers the chance to walk along the old forest trails through dense oak and deodar woods. Starting from Chakrata at 2,200 meters, the trek takes you up to 3,000 meters at Devban.
With its peaceful trails, stunning views, and refreshing forest air, the Deoban Trek is a wonderful escape for anyone who loves nature and wants a short adventure in the mountains.
At the highest point of the Deoban Trek, you can see around 55 mountains on a clear day! Some of the famous peaks you’ll spot include Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Bandarpoonch, and Swargarohini. It feels like every big mountain you can think of is right in front of you.
What makes it even more amazing is that you get these views on a short two-day trek, which is rare even for longer treks.
The trail takes you through peaceful forests full of pine, oak, and deodar trees. If you love walking in nature, this is the perfect trek for you.
In some parts, you’ll walk on a narrow path surrounded by tall pine trees that block the sunlight, making it cool and shady. Along the way, you’ll also see wild strawberry plants and colorful flowers, making the trek even more exciting.
Deoban is home to many birds, making it a great trek for birdwatchers. In winter, you might spot birds like the Himalayan Monal and Kalij Pheasant. If you enjoy watching birds in their natural habitat, you’ll love this part of the trek.

Spring in Deoban begins mid-March and lasts until the end of April. As the snow melts in the higher reaches, the meadows start turning lush green, signaling the season’s arrival. Delicate wildflowers peek through the grass, adding vibrant hues to the landscape.
During May and June, summer paints Deoban in a vivid green that’s unique to this season. The meadows and forests shine brightly under the sun, creating a picturesque setting.
This is also the easiest time to trek, as rainfall is minimal and the forest canopy provides shade from the harsh sun. It’s an ideal season to introduce children to the Himalayas during their summer holidays.
From July to mid-September, the monsoon breathes life into the forests and meadows. The lush green landscape is dotted with tiny white, pink, and blue flowers, creating a stunning contrast. This season showcases Deoban’s vibrant beauty at its peak.
Autumn, spanning September to November, offers the clearest summit views, as post-monsoon skies are free from haze. The meadows take on a golden-brown hue, and the air is crisp and scented with pine. This is one of the most picturesque times to explore Deoban’s natural charm.
Winter in Deoban, from early December to February, provides a magical snow-filled experience. The trail remains accessible as snow is not too thick during this time, making it perfect for trekking and camping.
However, trekking in late December and January should be avoided due to heavy snowfall, which may block trails and make trekking challenging.
Each season in Deoban offers a unique charm, making it a year-round destination for nature lovers and adventurers.
Note: – avoid late December and January due to heavy snowfall
